English
shampoo
Etymology
First recorded in 1762 as a verb meaning “to massage”,[1][2] probably borrowed from Hindi चाँपो (cā̃po), imperative of Hindi चाँपना (cā̃pnā, “to press, knead”).[3][2][4] The practice is described in A Voyage to the East Indies (1762).[1]
The sense “to lather and wash the hair” is recorded by 1860, and the noun “soap for shampooing” by 1866.[1]
