Etymology

It is from Italian nazione + -ale.[2][3][4][5][1] Wiktionary compares New Latin nātiōnālis, a modern formation on the model of the European languages.[1] The noun is a learned borrowing of Latin nātiō (“birth; people, nation”), from nāscor (“to be born”).[3][1]

Earliest recorded meaning

The first record is a document of 1488, in the sense “of the nation”.[2][4][6] DEI and Nocentini date the adjective to the 15th century.[7][3]

Semantic evolution

Tommaseo's dictionary (1861) knows nazionale as “of the same nation” and “belonging to the nation”, with phrases such as guardia nazionale, the citizen militia, and concilio nazionale, an assembly of a nation's bishops.[8] Its weight grew with the political idea of the nation, which entered Italian with new force at the time of the French Revolution.[2][9]

In the 20th century the adjective named state bodies and goods (the Biblioteca nazionale, the strada nazionale), and became a noun: la nazionale is the national team, and un nazionale a player in it, both recorded in 1958.[2][4] Nazionali were also a cheap brand of cigarettes of the state monopoly.[4][10][11]

Timeline

  • 1488 – Nazionale appears in a document.[2][6]
  • 1834 – Nazionalizzare is recorded.[3]
  • 1847 – Internazionale is recorded.[3]
  • 1958 – The nouns la nazionale “national team” and il nazionale “national player” are recorded.[2]
