Etymology
It is a clipping of télévision, matching English tele, occasionally used (1946).[2][3][4][1] The element télé- is from Ancient Greek τῆλε (têle, “far off”).[5]
Earliest recorded meaning
L'Écran français of 5 March 1952 speaks of a récepteur de télé “television set”.[2]
Semantic evolution
By 1960 one could faire une télé “appear on television” and speak of un style télé.[2] It is both the medium and the set (allumer la télé), and is used in apposition: feuilleton télé.[4][5] A very familiar variant is téloche.[4]
