- Other spellings: LIKÉ, plural likédz, in Papahagi's dictionary;[2] LICHE, plural lichedsi, in Pascu, who also gives Nikolaidis's licheă, plural lichei.[3]
Etymology
It is borrowed from Turkish leke (“stain”),[2][3] which Eren derives from Persian لكا (lakā, “spot, stain”).[4] Pascu lists Modern Greek λεκές (lekés, “stain”) and the Bulgarian and Albanian forms of the same Turkish word as parallels;[3] Babiniotis also traces the Greek word through Turkish to Persian.[5]
Semantic evolution
The word kept the sense of its Turkish source, a stain or soiling.[2][3][6] Aromanian formed from it the verb lichisescu "to stain, to soil", which Pascu compares with Modern Greek λεκιάζω (lekiázo).[3][1]
