Forms

együtt[1] Early spellings are eggùt (before 1495), Egyut (1507), egieth (about 1512), eggyot (1588); the dialects have ëggyütt, öggyütt, eggyött.[2][3]

Etymology

It is formed from Hungarian egy (“one”) + -t (“locative suffix”): a fixed case form of the numeral egy “one” with the old locative ending ⟨-t⟩.[4][3][5][1] The related együvé “to one place” has the lative ending ⟨-é⟩, and együnnen “from one place” piles up the endings ⟨-n⟩ and ⟨-n⟩.[4][3]

How the forms arose is disputed.[4] TESz sets out two views: that they are fixed case forms, which leaves unexplained the closed vowel at the end of the stem, and that they were made on the model of másunnan, másuvá and the adverb meaning “elsewhere”, with help from innen and onnan for the ablative form; it calls the question unresolved.[4] ÚESz accepts the first explanation and rejects the analogy as mistaken.[3]

Earliest recorded meaning

The first record is in the Guary Codex, written before 1495, where eggùt means “somewhere, in one place”: Jesus taught not only in one place.[2][3]

Semantic evolution

TESz takes “in one place” for the original sense, which now lives on mainly in the dialects; from it came “together, with one another” (1507), “at the same time” and “to one place” (both in Calepinus, 1585).[4][3] The phrase együtt is, másutt is “here and there” is common in Transylvanian records from 1586, and a will of 1507 from Kolozsvár already has egyetembe in the sense “together”.[6]

Use like a postposition, with -val/-vel (vélek együtt “together with them”), and like a preverb is found from the 16th century.[4] NSz dates the senses “sharing someone's feelings” and “altogether, in total” from 1772.[7] The derivative együttes “joint; ensemble” is a word of the language reform: TESz and Zaicz date it to 1842, ÚESz to 1833, with the sense “ensemble, team” from 1870.[2][5][3][8]
