Etymology

It is from restaurō “to restore, rebuild” with the suffix -tiō.[2][1][3]

Earliest recorded meaning

Lewis & Short and Gaffiot cite the Digest, in legal Latin.[4][5] Köbler's first source is perhaps an inscription.[6]

Semantic evolution

It meant a renewal, restoration of a condition, in legal language, as of a servitude.[2][4]

In Medieval Latin it meant restitution, compensation, and improvement, added value.[7] British Medieval Latin used it for restoring a person's condition, in medicine, and for the restoration of buildings and objects.[8] Through Old French it gave English restoration in the late 14th century, “a means of healing; renewing of something lost”.[3]

Timeline

  • 533 AD – The Digest uses it.[4][6]
  • late 14th century – English restoration is recorded.[3]

Meanings

Noun

  1. Renewal, restoration.[2]
  2. (Medieval Latin) Compensation; improvement.[7]
