Etymology

It is from praeparō “to prepare” with the suffix -tiō, from prae- and parō “to make ready”.[2][1][3]

Earliest recorded meaning

The OLD's earliest citation is from Cicero, “preparation”.[2] Köbler dates Cicero 81–43 BC.[4]

Semantic evolution

It meant the action of getting ready, preparation, as in Cicero's De officiis and Tusculans, and a thing prepared.[2][5] Quintilian uses it in rhetoric.[5]

British Medieval Latin used it for preparation, and for the day of preparation before the Sabbath.[6] Through Old French it gave English preparation in the late 14th century.[3]
