Etymology
It is from Hungarian ez (“this”) + -ért (“for”), a fixed case form of the demonstrative with the causal suffix.[4][5][6][1] ÚESz and Zaicz list it among the fixed case forms of the pronoun, first recorded in the Munich Codex.[5][6]
The pronoun itself is probably inherited from the Uralic period, from Proto-Uralic *i (“this”); its ⟨z⟩ is a pronoun-forming suffix.[5][4][6]
Earliest recorded meaning
The first record is Eʒert in the Munich Codex (text written after 1416, copied in 1466).[5][4] The codex uses it for “therefore, for this reason”.[7]
Semantic evolution
In old texts the word is both a case form of the pronoun, “for this (thing)”, and an adverb, “for this reason”: Transylvanian records of the 16th century have ezért az én könyörgésemért “for this request of mine” (1564) beside ezért “therefore” (1568).[8] The word list of the Sermones renders Latin ex hoc with ezerdh.[9]
As a conjunction introducing a consequence, “so, therefore”, the NSz quotes it from 1834–1835.[10] The ÉrtSz treats the three uses, the case form of ez, the stressed adverb of cause or purpose and the unstressed conjunction, separately.[11]
Timeline
- 1416 (copy of 1466) – Eʒert in the Munich Codex.[5][4]
- 1519 – imezért beside ezért in a Kolozsvár record.[8]
- 1564 – ezert as a case form of the pronoun, in Kolozsvár.[8]
- 1568 – ezert “therefore”, in Kolozsvár.[8]
- 1834–1835 – the first NSz quotation of the conjunction.[10]
