Forms
pāpālis (neuter pāpāle); third-declension two-termination adjective[1]
Etymology
It is formed from Latin pāpa2 (“pope”) + -ālis in Medieval Latin.[2][1]
Earliest recorded meaning
Köbler's first record is Pope Alexander III (1159–1181),[3] and it means papal, belonging to the pope.[3][4]
Semantic evolution
It was used of what belonged to the pope and of what the pope issued or sanctioned, such as papal taxes beside royal ones in an English account of 1315.[2] Köbler also glosses it “episcopal”.[3] As a neuter noun it meant what belongs to the pope.[2] The word lives on in Italian papale and in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and French papal.[1]
