  • IPA (Ecclesiastical): [ekˈspɔr.to][1]

Forms

exportō (present infinitive exportāre, perfect active exportāvī, supine exportātum); first conjugation[1]

Etymology

It is from ex- “out” and portō “to carry”.[2][1][3][4]

Earliest recorded meaning

Lewis and Short's earliest example is from Varro, of Jupiter carrying Europa from Phoenicia.[5] Köbler dates Varro 116–27 BC.[6]

Semantic evolution

It meant to carry out, take away, especially to send overseas, as Cicero's statue carried out of a town and gold sent yearly from Italy to Jerusalem.[2][5][7] In Cicero it also meant to send to market, export.[2]

It was borrowed into French as exporter and Spanish exportar, and English export is recorded by the 1610s, “to carry out of a place”.[1][4]

  • 116–27 BC – Varro uses it of carrying away.[5][6]
