Forms

riunione f (plural riunioni)[1]

Etymology

It is formed from Italian riunire + -ione, on the model of French réunion, recorded in 1468.[2][3][4][5] Zingarelli, Treccani and Devoto analyse it instead as ri- and unione.[6][7][8] DELI and Nocentini treat it under the verb.[9][10]

Earliest recorded meaning

GRADIT dates the word before 1626, and DELI's first record is Paolo Segneri in 1673, in the sense “act of reuniting”.[2][9] Segneri writes of God's grace urging a soul divided from itself to “treat of reunion” (trattare di riunione).[11] Zingarelli has an earlier date, before 1557.[6]

Semantic evolution

At first the word meant the joining of separate things and, in Paolo Sarpi, agreement between divided doctrines.[5] Leopardi complained that the universal union promoted by philosophy had turned into a separation of individuals (La riunione universale promossa dalla egregia filosofia s'è convertita in una separazione individuale).[5]

The meaning now most common, “a meeting of several people to discuss, talk or attend an event”, is recorded in the Milanese press in 1808.[9] The sporting sense, a set of races held on one or more days, follows in 1926, and the sense “reunion of people who had been apart, reconciliation” in 1959.[9]
