  • US: /maɪˈkɹɑ.skə.pi/, /maɪˈkɹɒs.kə.pi/[1]

Etymology

It is formed from English microscope + -y.[2][3][4][5] The OED compares German Mikroskopie (1680) and French microscopie (1832).[2] Microscope is from Italian microscopio, apparently from New Latin microscopium, formed from micro- and -scopium, as in telescopium.[2]

Earliest recorded meaning

The use of the microscope in scientific investigation: 1665, in Pepys's diary for 20 January.[2] Merriam-Webster dates it to about 1665,[4] Etymonline to the 1660s.[3]

Semantic evolution

The meaning has stayed the same: the use of the microscope, and the branch of science or technology concerned with it, often with a qualifying word.[2][4] Collins also uses it for the study, design and making of microscopes.[6]
