Forms

shuplu m (plural shuplji)[1]

  • Plural shuplji.[2][1]
  • Other spellings: suplu and shub in Wiktionary;[1] suplu in Cunia;[3] ȘÚPLU in Papahagi's dictionary, which refers to súplu and șub;[4] σούπλου and σιούπλου (suplu, sjúplu), plural -πλι, in Nikolaidis's Greek script;[5] SUPLU, plural șuple, in Pascu's dictionary.[6]

Etymology

According to Papahagi it is borrowed from Albanian shupullë (“slap”).[4] Pascu files it among the Turkish elements, from Turkish sepele (“slap, box on the ear”), and compares Slavic words for a handful or the hollow of the hand, which Štrekelj had taken to a verb meaning "to seize".[6]

Earliest recorded meaning

The oldest dictionary record is Nikolaidis's of 1909, which glosses it with Modern Greek πυγμή (pygmí, “fist”) and γρόνθος (grónthos, “punch”).[5]

Semantic evolution

The word names both the clenched fist and a blow struck with it.[7][4][6] Cunia gives bush, bushtu and bushur as synonyms.[7]

Timeline

  • 1909 – suplu, sjúplu “fist, punch” in Nikolaidis's dictionary.[5]
  • 1925 – Pascu derives it from Turkish.[6]
  • 1963 – Papahagi derives it from Albanian.[8]
