Pronunciation

  • /ɦɛt.ˈzɛlf.də/, /(ɦ)ət.ˈzɛlf.də/[1]

Forms

hetzelfde[1] Older forms are ’t zelfde, hetzelfste and ’t zelfste.[2] It is the neuter singular of dezelfde.[2][3]

Etymology

It is from Dutch het + zelfde, the neuter article with ⟨zelfde⟩, which is, like ⟨zelfste⟩, a strengthened form of the pronoun zelve that expresses complete identity.[2][3][1] Compare the older hetzelve.[2]

Earliest recorded meaning

Van der Sijs dates the demonstrative pronoun dezelfde, hetzelfde from 1240, after the Vroegmiddelnederlands Woordenboek.[4][5] The Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal's earliest quotation, from 1612, uses het selfde on its own for “the same thing”.[2]

Semantic evolution

Besides “identical, the very same” the word came to mean “alike, equal”, as in het resultaat is hetzelfde.[2] The phrase van hetzelfde “of the same material” is found in 1643, of a green cloth coat with a bodice of the same cloth.[2] Dat is mij hetzelfde means “it is all the same to me”.[2]

Van hetzelfde! is a reply to a good wish, “the same to you”; the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal asks whether it is short for van 't zelfde laken een pak.[2][6] Van Dale also has voor hetzelfde geld, used to say that things might just as well have turned out otherwise.[6]

Dutch dezelfde, hetzelfde was borrowed into Negerhollands (selbu, seldu) and into Sranan Tongo as a srefi.[7]

Timeline

  • 1240 – The demonstrative dezelfde, hetzelfde is first recorded.[4]
  • 1612 – Het selfde is used for “the same thing”.[2]
  • 1643 – Van hetselfde “of the same material” appears.[2]
  • 1840 – Dat's hetzelfde “that makes no difference” is recorded.[2]

Usage notes
