Etymology

It is from Latin glōrior (“to boast”) + -tiō, from glōria (“glory”).[2][1] De Vaan reports the etymology of ⟨glōria⟩ as ⟨*gnōria⟩ “knowledge, fame”, akin to gnārus and ignōrō, as accepted by some scholars and rejected by others.[3]

Earliest recorded meaning

Lewis & Short call it a word formed by Cicero, in the De finibus.[4][5] Köbler dates Cicero 81–43 BC.[6]

Semantic evolution

It meant boasting, glorying, vaunting, exulting.[2][4]

In Ecclesiastical Latin it meant glory, boasting.[7] British Medieval Latin used it for a boast, boasting, as in Bede.[8] English gloriation is from it.[1]
