Forms

adhaesus m (genitive adhaesūs); fourth declension[1][2]

Etymology

It is from Latin adhaereō (“to cling, adhere”) + -tus, a verbal noun.[1][2][3] The verb is a compound of haereō (“to stick”), which de Vaan traces to Proto-Italic *χais-ē-; he finds no credible cognates outside Italic.[4]

Earliest recorded meaning

It is found only in Lucretius,[4][5] who speaks of the adhesion of dust, pulveris adhaesus.[2][6]

Semantic evolution

Lucretius uses it of the clinging of dust, of the joining of limbs and of moisture.[5][2] The grammarian Nonius later cites it.[2][5]

Usage notes
