Pronunciation

Forms

jól (comparative jobban, superlative legjobban)[2]

Etymology

It is from Hungarian jó + -l, a fixed suffixed form of the adjective jó “good” that became an adverb of manner.[3][4][1] The adjective itself is an inherited word; ÚESz reconstructs Proto-Ugric *jomɜ or *jamɜ “good” and compares Mansi joməs and Khanty jĕm.[4]

Earliest recorded meaning

The first record is ÿol in the Jókai Codex, a text written after 1372 and copied about 1448.[4][3]

Semantic evolution

Transylvanian records of the 16th to the 18th centuries show the main uses: “properly, as it should be done” (1583), jól tesz vkivel “to do someone good” (1551), and, of health, nem jól vagyok “I am not well” (1585) and nem igen jól érzem magamat “I do not feel very well” (1769).[5]

Modern Hungarian uses it for doing something correctly or skilfully, for clear seeing and hearing, for a favourable outcome, for pleasant feelings, for looking attractive, and for plenty or profit (jól eladta “he sold it well”).[2] It also intensifies a verb, “thoroughly”: in Szeged Jó megverte a fiát “he gave his son a good beating”; there and in the Ormánság the final -l is often dropped.[6][7] Further dialect senses are “at a good price”, “enough” and “for a long time”.[6][8]
