Pronunciation

  • /iˌɡwalˈmente/, [iˌɣ̞walˈmẽn̪.t̪e][1]

Etymology

It is formed from Spanish igual (“equal”) + -mente (“-ly”).[1][2] The earliest texts write it Old Spanish egualmente, egualmientre, egualmiente and ygual mente, with the older form of the adjective, egual, and the older forms of the suffix.[3][4][5] The adjective is from Latin aequālis (“equal”), from aequus (“level, even”).[5][6] Barcia compares Catalan igualment, French également and Italian egualmente, and gives aequāliter as the Latin equivalent.[7]

Earliest recorded meaning

The CDH's first record is in the Cortes de Benavente of 1202, on new coinage: todos los de su regno egualmente debenla recibir “all the people of his kingdom must accept it equally”.[8] The DEMel's earliest record in an original text is egualmientre in the Fuero de Plasencia (1221).[3]

Semantic evolution

The first sense was “in the same way, with equality”;[9] Alfonso X's Lapidario uses it of flesh growing back evenly in a wound.[9] The sense “also, likewise” appears in Alfonso X's prose by 1259.[9] Autoridades defines only the first, with quotations from Mariana and the Quijote; the Academy added “also, likewise” in its later editions.[10][11][12]

Moliner and the DLE note its frequent use in polite replies, returning a wish to the speaker: “the same to you”.[13][14]
