Pronunciation

  • UK: /ˈbəʊ.nə(ɹ)/[1]
  • US: /ˈboʊ.nɚ/[1]

Etymology

It is formed from English bone + -er,[2][3][4] partly from the noun and partly, in the butchers' sense, from the verb, to remove the bones from.[2] The slang sense "blunder" is modelled on bonehead,[2][5][4][6] although Green's Dictionary of Slang connects it with bone of contention.[7] Etymonline takes the sense "erection" from the earlier bone-on, probably a variant of hard-on, with the shared idea of hardness.[8]

Earliest recorded meaning

In school slang, a punch or blow to a bony part of the body: 1844, in a Charterhouse play; obsolete after 1895.[2] Wright's dialect dictionary records it at Winchester School for a blow on the back.[9]

Semantic evolution

In Australia from 1895 a boner was a worker in an abattoir who cut meat from the bones, and since 1944 a cow of poor quality whose meat goes into low-grade beef products;[2] Merriam-Webster also records it for a person who put bones into corsets and other garments (first known use 1896).[3] In American student slang of 1896 a boner was a hard-working student.[7] The sense "blunder" began in American baseball: in 1912 it was a poor decision or tactical error in a game,[2][7][8] and it spread to any foolish or embarrassing mistake, often in to pull a boner.[3][7] The sense "erection of the penis" is recorded from 1936,[2] though Etymonline dates it to the 1950s[8] and Green's Dictionary of Slang's first quotation is from 1966; it has also come to mean a strong attraction to or excitement about something.[2][7]
