Pronunciation

  • /ˈmoː.ɣə.lək/[1]

Forms

mogelijk (not comparable)[1]

Etymology

It is inherited from Middle Dutch mogelijc, from Dutch mogen + -lijk, formed from the stem of the verb in its old sense “to be able”.[1][2][3][4][5] The adverb is Middle Dutch mogelike, made with the adverbial ending.[1][2] The same formation is Middle Low German mogelik and Middle High German mügelich (modern German möglich).[6][4] Middle Dutch also had the variants mogenlijc and mogentlijc.[7]

Earliest recorded meaning

The Bernardus glossary of 1240, from Limburg, renders Latin possibilis with mogenlec.[2][8] The adverb moghenlike “mightily, with power” is found in a West Flemish text of 1285.[2]

Semantic evolution

Middle Dutch mogelijc meant “what can happen”, but also “fitting, reasonable” (1299), “natural, to be expected”, “allowed” and “pleasing, lovely”;[6][2] Kiliaan records moghelicke spijse “tasty food”.[6][2] The adverb mogelike could mean “with power” and “splendidly”, and only later “possibly”.[6] These old senses died out, and the modern adjective keeps “possible” and “conceivable”.[7][9]

The Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal quotes elliptical uses such as zo mogelijk “if possible” and mogelijk dat “it may be that” (1784), the phrase alle mogelijke middelen (1631) and the exclamation hoe is het Gods mogelijk?[7] The use as an adverb, “perhaps”, is old;[6][9] Kiliaan glosses it with machschien.[6][9]

Danish and Norwegian mulig and Swedish möjlig come from Dutch or Low German, and Negerhollands had mogelik and mooglik.[10] Afrikaans has moontlik.[1]
