Forms
taliātūra f (genitive taliātūrae); first declension[1] Gaffiot writes it tāliātūra.[2] Niermeyer gives the medieval spellings teclatura and ticlatura.[3][4]
Etymology
It is a noun from Late Latin taleō (“to cut”) with the suffix -tūra;[3][4][1] Köbler and Georges spell the verb with ⟨i⟩.[3][4][1] Du Cange treats it under tālea (“cutting, thin piece of wood”),[5][6] a noun for which de Vaan finds no viable etymology unless it is derived from tālus (“ankle, knuckle”).[6]
Earliest recorded meaning
The writings of the Roman land surveyors have it for a cleft;[1][2] Köbler's other early source is the Edict of Rothari (643).[4]
Semantic evolution
In Medieval Latin it was a notch cut in a tree to mark a boundary.[3][4] Du Cange quotes a Provençal glossary for the related talhadura, glossed cissura, fissura.[5]
Timeline
- 643 – The Edict of Rothari uses it.[4]
