Semantic evolution

It means relating to religious rites or ceremonies.[2][7] Festus explains that the Etruscan books called rituales laid down how cities were founded, altars and temples consecrated, and walls, gates, tribes and armies ordered.[7] Ammianus Marcellinus uses the neuter plural ritualia as a noun for ceremonial rites.[7][4]

In Ecclesiastical Latin it relates to the rites of the Church.[8] English ritual was taken from French or directly from this word in the 1560s.[9]
