Forms

regiōnālis (neuter regiōnāle); third-declension two-termination adjective[1]

Etymology

It is from Latin regiō (“region, district”) + -ālis,[2][3][4] from regō “to direct”.[5]

Earliest recorded meaning

Augustine, in his work on baptism against the Donatists, speaks of a provincial council as opposed to a plenary one.[2][3] Köbler dates Augustine 354–430 AD.[5]

Semantic evolution

It meant of or belonging to a region or province, provincial, and is mainly Late Latin.[2][6] The adverb regiōnāliter “by regions” is older, in Apuleius' On the World and Caelius Aurelianus.[2][6]

In British medieval Latin a regiōnāle concilium was a provincial council, such as one held at Westminster under a papal legate.[6] English regional is recorded in the early 15th century.[4]

Timeline

  • c. 125–175 AD – Apuleius uses the adverb regiōnāliter.[2][5]
  • 354–430 AD – Augustine speaks of a provincial council.[2][5]
  • early 15th century – English regional is recorded.[4]
