The OLD's earliest citations are from Cicero, of provincial administration.[2] Köbler dates Cicero 81–43 BC.[4]
Semantic evolution
It meant concerned with the administration of a province, and belonging to a province, provincial, as in Cicero, and as a noun an inhabitant of a province.[2]
In Christian Latin it meant of a church province, and as a noun the head of a province of a religious order.[5][3] Medieval Latin comes prōvinciālis was a landgrave.[5][4] British Medieval Latin used it of Roman provinces and of Provence.[6] It survives in Italian provinciale and French and Spanish provincial, and through Old French it gave English provincial in the late 14th century, first in Church use.[1][3]
