Forms

paresco (present infinitive parescere); third conjugation[1]

Etymology

It is an inchoative verb from Latin pāreō (“to appear”), formed with the suffix -scō.[1] The TLL lists its Romance continuants: French paraître, Old Occitan pareisser, Catalan pareixer, Spanish parecer and Portuguese parecer.[1]

Earliest recorded meaning

The TLL knows it from one anonymous Latin medical text, which tells how quinces are to be cooked in honey until they become soft and are no longer to be seen.[1]

Semantic evolution

It is a rare word, meaning to appear or become visible; the TLL also lists the compound appārēscō.[1] It lived on in the Romance languages, in Spanish and Portuguese parecer and French paraître.[1]

Meanings

Verb

  1. To appear, become visible; with a negative, to disappear from view.[1]
