inspecto
Pronunciation
Forms
īnspectō (present infinitive īnspectāre, perfect active īnspectāvī, supine īnspectātum); first conjugation[1]
Etymology
It is from Latin in- + spectō (“to look at”), and serves as the frequentative of inspiciō (“to look into”).[2][3][1] De Vaan traces ⟨spectō⟩ to speciō (“to look”), from Proto-Italic *spekje/o- and Proto-Indo-European *speḱ-ie/o- (“to look”), cognate with Sanskrit पश्यति (páśyati, “looks at”), Ancient Greek σκέπτομαι (sképtomai, “to look at”) and Old High German spehōn (“to spy”).[4]
Earliest recorded meaning
The OLD's first examples are in Plautus: in the Bacchides a lover longs for a chance to look at the girl.[2]
Semantic evolution
It means “to look at, watch, observe”, and intransitively “to look on”, as the jealous lover in the Bacchides who must look on while she lies beside another.[2] The present participle in the ablative absolute means “before the eyes of”: Plautus' Mercury promises the audience a trick vōbīs īnspectantibus, “with you looking on”.[2] Lewis and Short note that classical prose uses it only in the present participle.[3] The land surveyor Hyginus uses it of facing a direction.[2]
