distīnctiō f (genitive distīnctiōnis); third declension[1]
Etymology
It is from distinguō “to separate, distinguish” with the suffix -tiō.[2][1][3]
Earliest recorded meaning
The OLD's earliest citations are from Cicero, of making a distinction.[2] Köbler dates Cicero 81–43 BC.[4]
Semantic evolution
In Columella it meant separating into divisions, in Cicero distinguishing, a distinction, and a detailed description, and in Quintilian distinctness, what sets a thing apart.[2]
In Ecclesiastical Latin it meant distinction, difference, division.[5] Medieval Latin used it for a logical distinction, a chapter of a treatise, and a stipulation.[6] British Medieval Latin used it for division, a boundary, a punctuation mark and a pause in music.[7] It was borrowed into Italian distinzione and French distinction, and gave English distinction about 1200, first of a part of a book.[1][3]
