Forms
augurātus m (genitive augurātūs); fourth declension[1] Priscian reports that the ancients said augerātus.[2] The Appendix to Probus notes that the ablative augurātū occurs only in the singular.[2]
Etymology
It is from Latin augur (“augur”) + -ātus, or auguror (“to take the auguries”) with the suffix -tus of action nouns.[3][2][1]
Earliest recorded meaning
Köbler dates it from Cicero,[4] who speaks of a man's augurship and of the emblem of the augurship: insigne auguratus.[5]
Semantic evolution
It is the office of augur, the augurship:[3][5] Cicero says that Romulus' augury was pastoral, not of the city, and Tacitus has a man invested with the augurship.[2][5] Pliny the Younger speaks of receiving it.[5] It also means augury, the practice of reading signs,[3] and Tertullian uses it as an equivalent of augurium.[5]
Timeline
- 81–43 BC – Cicero, of the office of augur.[5][4]
- 98–115 AD – Tacitus, of a man holding the augurship.[5][4]
- c. 160–220 AD – Tertullian, in the sense augury.[5][4]
