Forms

találkozik[1] Dialect tanálkozik.[2][3]

Etymology

It is from Hungarian talál (“to find”) + -kozik, a derivative of talál.[4][5][6][1] The stem of the base verb is inherited from Proto-Uralic *tole- (“to come”), with the frequentative suffix ⟨-l⟩.[4][5][7][1] Its relatives are Eastern Mari tola- (“to come”), Finnish tulla (“to come; become”), Tundra Nenets to- and Selkup tü-.[5][6][8] The change from “come” to “find, meet” has parallels in Latin veniō (“to come”) beside inveniō (“to find”).[4][5]

The “meet” sense of the derivative continues the oldest sense of the base verb itself, “to come upon someone, to meet”.[4][6] The form ⟨tanál-⟩ arose by dissimilation of /l–l/ to /n–l/.[4]

Earliest recorded meaning

The first record is talalkoʒek in Pesti's fables of 1536, meaning “to be found somewhere, to be present”.[5][4]

Semantic evolution

The older sense, “to turn up, to be found, to exist”, is common in old texts: a Transylvanian record of 1590 says találkoznak néha egyéb közönséges szükségek is “other common needs sometimes arise too”.[9] The sense “to meet someone” is recorded in Kolozsvár in 1570; ÚESz dates it from 1633.[9][5] The ÉrtSz still lists “to be found, to exist” as a literary, dated sense.[10]

The derivatives találkozás “meeting” (1771) and találkozó (as a participle 1775, as a noun “meeting, date” 1843) appear in the 18th and 19th centuries.[4] A Szeged belief holds that if two people meet twice in one day, neither will die that year.[2]
