Pronunciation

  • [ˈtørteːnik][1]

Forms

történik[1] Old spellings are tertenek and tewrtenek (Jókai Codex) and twrtynnek (1533); a dialect form is törkénik.[2][3] The verb is used only in the third person.[4][5]

Etymology

The word is of unknown origin: TESz, EWUng, ÚESz and Zaicz give no etymology for the stem.[2][6][3][7] The ending is the -ik of the intransitive verbs.[1]

Its derivatives connected with history as a discipline, történész, történelem and történelmi, are creations of the language reform.[2][3][7]

Earliest recorded meaning

The first record is in the Jókai Codex (after 1372, copy of about 1448): Azert tewrtenek nemy nappon, “so it happened one day”; the sense is “to happen, take place”.[2][3]

Semantic evolution

The verb has kept its sense since the codices.[2][3] In 16th-century Transylvanian records it is used of what befalls a person, as in ha halála történik “if his death should come about”, and of falling into a state, especially an illness.[8]

The noun történet is recorded about 1456 as “chance event” and in 1490 as “event”; in 1769 it was used for history as a school subject.[3][2] The language reform built on it: történész “historian” from 1833, történelem “history” and történelmi “historical” from 1842, the latter coined by Döbrentei.[3][2]
