Forms

aussitôt (invariable)[1] Aussi tost com (about 1260), aussi tost que (about 1330); written as one word from Du Bellay.[2] Older spellings aussitost, aussi-tôt.[1]

Etymology

It is from French aussi + tôt.[3][4][5][6][1] tôt continues popular Latin “tostum”, the neuter of Latin tostus (“roasted, burnt”) used as an adverb, which must first have meant “hotly”, hence “promptly”.[2][7]

Earliest recorded meaning

Bloch and Wartburg date aussi tost com “as soon as” to about 1260.[2]

Semantic evolution

Aussi tost que is found about 1330, and the adverb written as one word from Du Bellay in the 16th century.[2][6] Montaigne has aussi tost qu'il y a tant soit peu d'apparence, and Du Bellay Il est parfaict aussi tost que conceu.[6] In classical French aussitôt que could also mean “as quickly as” (Fénelon) or “as well as” (Saint-Simon).[4] The use as a preposition, aussitôt la lettre reçue, is accepted by Littré but criticized by some grammarians.[4][6]
