retrospective
Pronunciation
Etymology
It is formed from English retrospect + -ive,[2][3][4][5] after Latin.[6] The OED and Merriam-Webster take the first part directly from Medieval Latin retrospectus, past participle of retrospiciō (“to look back”),[6][7] which is recorded from the 13th century in British sources[6] and is formed from retrō (“back”) and speciō (“to look at”).[6][2] Etymonline traces the Latin verb to Proto-Indo-European *spek- (“to observe”).[2] Compare rétrospectif, recorded from 1779.[6]
Earliest recorded meaning
Taking effect from a date in the past, chiefly in law: 1660, in Fabian Philipps.[6] The sense "looking back on the past" is recorded from 1664,[6][5][7] the date Etymonline gives in the 1660s.[2]
Semantic evolution
From 1670 the adjective also meant developed after the fact, with hindsight,[6] and since 1785 a view lying behind a person.[6] Johnson (1755) defined it simply as "looking backwards", quoting Pope.[8] The noun was first an act of looking back, a review of the past (1789).[6] The use for an exhibition showing an artist's work over a period of time is recorded from 1903 as an adjective,[6] and Etymonline dates retrospective exhibition to 1908;[2] the noun in this sense is recorded from 1929, in The Times,[6][7] which Etymonline gives as by 1964.[2] The OED compares rétrospective, used of an exhibition from 1920.[6]
