concentration
Pronunciation
- IPA: /ˌkɒn.sənˈtɹeɪ.ʃən/ (UK); /ˌkɑn.sənˈtɹeɪ.ʃən/ (US)[1]
Etymology
It is formed from the verb concentrate and -ation,[2][3] or, in MWU's analysis, from com-, Latin centrum (“centre”) and the same suffix.[4]
Earliest recorded meaning
The action of bringing things towards a common centre: 1634 in the OED and MWU,[5][4] the 1630s in Etymonline.[2]
Semantic evolution
A mass collected in this way is from the 1670s.[2] The strengthening of a solution in chemistry is from 1790.[5] The steady focusing of the mind is from 1825, in phrenology,[2] before 1846 in the OED.[5] The concentration camp is from 1901, at first a compound for non-combatants in a war zone during the Second Boer War, an idea controversial from the start.[2] It was used in 1902 of US policy in the Philippines, and of Nazi German prisons for dissidents and minorities from 1934 and Soviet ones from 1935.[2]
