Pronunciation

  • [ˈvaɪ̯tɐhɪn][1]

Forms

weiterhin (adverb)[1]

Etymology

It is from German weiter + hin, the adverbs “further” and “thither, onward”.[1][2] The Grimms' dictionary quotes it written separately as well as in one word, as in Kaspar Stieler's “es ist weiter hin als sechs uhr”.[2]

Semantic evolution

The Grimms record it first in space, “further along the way” (Nicolai: bis Koburg und weiterhin), and at the same time of time, “in what follows, from then on” (Herder, Kant).[2] It also meant “beyond that, in addition” in enumerations (Gottfried Keller) and served to continue an argument (Herder, Schopenhauer).[2]

Meanings

Adverb

  1. Still, as before: Sie wohnt weiterhin in Hamburg.[3][1]
  2. In future, from now on: Wir werden das Projekt weiterhin fördern.[3]
  3. Furthermore, in addition: Weiterhin ist zu beachten, dass …[3][1]
  4. (dated) Farther, further along.[2][1]
